Movie Review – Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Yes…. Johnny Depp is back…. Togged in his pirate attire and donning his eyeliner with even better Punch Lines that make you laugh and simultaneously let your thought process running.

Though On Stranger Tides fails to actually recreate the entire adventurous spirit that the original trilogy possessed, but Captain Jack Sparrow holds the movie well. And what makes Captain Jack Sparrow special is that he is able to exploit his emotions and thoughts, and lets add: control and manipulate them also. Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) charms one and all with his wits.

Joining him yet again this time round are Geoffrey Rush(Barbossa – as a Privateer) , and Kevin McNally as Jack Sparrow’s loyal and trusty first mate Gibbs.

Penelope Cruz as Angelica, Jack’s ex-flame and as daughter of Blackbeard (Ian Mcshane) doen’t have much to give us. Don’t expect anything.

Sam Claflin and Astrid Berges-Frisbey as a missionary and mermaid respectively were to create an atmosphere of Love that Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom earlier pared up but were just passe.  Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom aren’t really missed. The director tries to create an atmosphere of Love but fails. Astrid looks clumsy, Sam’s stronger character does not go well either.

The Black Pearl crew are missed- Pintel & Ragetti (Baldy and Eyeball), Cotton and his Parrot. Jack, the monkey is ‘inside’ the Black Pearl and does a cameo.

The character  ‘Scrum’, I believe was to compensate the ‘missing’ crew. But he is just any other character you may come across.

Blackbeard’s (Ian Mcshane) introduction was good, giving him a nice villainous touch to the character but it soon dies down to someone on the run to avoid his death as per prophecy.  A stronger villian and better ‘life’ to his character would’ve actually given movie a different look & feel altogether. But he is disappointing.

And yes the mermaids. The whole mermaid sequence is amazing, with an unexpected twist to what they actually are capable of.

The role of Spanish Armada is not very certain until the very last action scenes.

Fountain of Youth is the target of all. We knew that from PoC3.

Some action sequences seems repetitive but then humour is something that brings about a change.

Soundtrack is brilliant as always. Hans Zimmer = RESPECT.

Movie will be average, but go watch it for Mermaids, Pirates and Captain Jack Sparrow. You’ll definitely be entertained.

Rating: 3.5/5

PS: Please wait till the end of credits. Not very sure about PoC5 but…. who knows!!!
